Robert Doveton Thorpe was born on 25th August 1843 in Fort St. George, India. He entered the service of the Honourable East India Company on 26th November 1856 as a Cadet in the Madras Infantry having been recommended by his father, Colonel Thorpe of the Madras Infantry.
He saw service during the Mutiny with the 27th Madras Native Infantry and his medal with 2 clasps in confirmed on the Regimental roll. He married on 18th December 1861 but sadly his wife died on 1st May 1862. He went on to serve in the Madras Staff Corps. Captain Thorpe committed suicide whilst under great mental depression on 17th September 1873 just 2 days after he had written his will, at Vizagapatam.
