Robert Coates was born in the parish of St. Clements, Ipswich, Suffolk, and enlisted in the 9th Lancers in London in May 1843, aged 19 years. He was subsequently present at Sobraon in the First Sikh War, and at the crossing of the Chenab and the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat in the Punjab 1848-49. Invalided to England in March 1850, he was discharged at Chatham in October of the same year as a result of ‘pulmonia affection’ and other complaints. P.N. - have no paperwork.
