Ex Collection of the late Eric Smith, sold by DNW (Noonans) 2009, Lot 8,

John Manchester was born in Portsmouth in September 1858 and entered the Royal Navy as a Barber in H.M.S. Duke of Wellington in December 1879. His subsequent appointments included Eclipse (January 1880 to September 1883); Duke of Wellington, February to March 1884, and Temeraire (April-May 1884). His service record also reveals that he was once imprisoned for 21 days. Manchester was ‘discharged to shore as undesirable from Duke of Wellington’ on 7 June 1884.

With copied service record.
