William George Poland was born on 3rd April 1862 at Plymouth Devon. He served from 2nd April 1880 and was pensioned on 5 November 1905 after 25 years service. He re-enlisted in WW1 on 2nd August 1914 until 21 June 1919 as a Chief Writer on shore service and was awarded a British War Medal only.

He died on 4th January 1939 in Plymouth, he was married to Kate (nee Dinnick) and they had 4 Children together, a son, Stewart, served in WW1 in the RAMC and Devonshire Regiment.
